FORMATIVE INFLUENCE
BIO
Dylan Bartolini-Volk is an abstract painter and photographer whose career bridges the worlds of fine art and commercial photography. A California native with multi-generational roots in Marin County and San Francisco, he has spent much of the past two decades living and working in Los Angeles.
His practice is driven by a belief in the value of hard work, self-sufficiency, and the relentless pursuit of varied experiences. Bartolini-Volk’s fiercely abstract paintings invite viewers into imagined landscapes shaped by light, movement, and atmosphere.

Formative Influence is an exploration of light. For nearly twenty years, I have worked in service of it. In photography, the sun speaks first, and I listen — light dictates what's possible, and my role is to translate its terms. In painting, that relationship reverses: I create the light myself, and from it, ideas take shape, morphing into unseen realities.
This shift — from documenting light to generating it — is what allows me to dissolve traditional landscape into something felt rather than recorded. I'm less interested in known physical perspective than in the emotional residue a place leaves behind.
Formative Influence comprises five distinct bodies of work, unified by a single impulse: to celebrate life by translating experience into form. Each is rooted in the light and landscape of Northern California and the American West — the terrain that first taught me how to see.
